The Craft Behind the Box
Welcome to Fine Handmade Boxes — where traditional craftsmanship meets timeless design. I’m Ian Brodie, and from my small workshop in South Manchester, I create bespoke hardwood boxes with precision, care, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of wood.
What began as a general woodworking venture in 2009 — building everything from cabinets to free-standing furniture — gradually evolved into a dedicated passion for boxmaking. It was the first jewellery box I ever made that truly changed my course. There’s something incredibly rewarding about working on a piece that, while small in scale, demands absolute accuracy and attention to detail. A box leaves nowhere to hide — every joint, veneer and component is on display.
Precision in Small Form
While boxes may appear simple at first glance, there’s a surprising level of complexity involved. Each one requires millimetre-perfect joints, balanced proportions, and thoughtful design to ensure both form and function are achieved. Whether it’s a hinged lid or a sliding top, every element is meticulously measured and crafted for a smooth, seamless fit. And because I don’t mass-produce, each box is unique — tailored to suit its purpose and the tastes of the individual who will own it.
Over the years, I’ve refined techniques that combine traditional hand tools with select modern methods where they add value — not speed for speed’s sake, but precision and consistency. Veneers are matched and pressed by hand, and I use time-honoured joinery techniques such as mitres, splines, and dovetails depending on the design and timber. Internal linings, trays and dividers are custom-fitted to ensure the box’s interior is as refined as its exterior.
The Beauty of Materials
Every box begins with the selection of timber — and this is no small decision. I work with a wide range of sustainably sourced hardwoods and exotic veneers, including walnut, rippled sycamore, bubinga, zebrano and figured maple, among others. Each piece of wood has its own character and challenges. The grain must be considered for strength, aesthetics, and stability. In many cases, I’ll bookmatch the veneers so that the grain runs symmetrically across the lid and sides — a small detail that elevates the final piece immeasurably.
To complement the timber, I use high-quality hardware including solid brass hinges, stay mechanisms, and magnetic catches. These not only provide longevity but add a tactile luxury to each box’s opening and closing action — a detail many clients don’t expect but always appreciate.
More Than Just a Box
Whether it’s a watch box, a keepsake chest, or a presentation piece for a corporate client, these boxes are more than just containers — they are personal, long-lasting heirlooms. Many are commissioned as gifts to mark milestones: weddings, retirements, anniversaries or personal achievements. Others are simply self-indulgences — a place to keep treasured items in something equally treasured.
Visit, Explore, Commission
My new online store makes it easier than ever to browse available pieces or place a bespoke order. You’ll also find a new Events section showing where I’ll be exhibiting next, and a blog where I’ll be sharing stories from the workshop, techniques, and all things crafty.
If you’re in South Manchester, I occasionally display a few boxes at a local jeweller — feel free to contact me for details. And if you’ve got an idea for a custom commission, I’d love to hear from you.
Thanks again for taking the time to visit. I hope this new site gives you a deeper appreciation of the work behind each box — and the passion that goes into every cut, corner, and curve.
